Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1886 at a general meeting held at
6 Elton Park, Sandycove.
At
the first meeting 42 people were proposed as original members and
elected. A committee was formed and the first Honorary Secretary
was A.R. Darley. The committee immediately set about obtaining a
site in the area and eventually chose the site on which the club
now stands at Elton Park, Sandycove.
The
Dublin Tennis Leagues were started soon after the foundation of
the club and Sandycove participated in the Dublin Leagues from their
inception.
In 1971 two excellent courts were constructed
thanks to the work of Aidan McCormack, Jimmy Casey, Michael Spellman,
Frank McGovern and others.
In 1978 the four grass courts were converted
to all weather surfaces. Having endured poor grass for many years
this was a most welcome change.
In
1981 The construction of a new clubhouse was completed to everyone's
satisfaction, containing new dressing rooms, function room, showers
and saunas.
In 1984 Planning permission was obtained for the
introduction of floodlighting for the tennis courts.
